Golden Punt

It’s the Golden Globes on Sunday evening, live on Sky, with Ricky Gervais hosting. Often a pointer to the Oscars, our interest is in the movie Up In The Air which has been getting a lot of heat but only premiered yesterday in the UK.

We’ve seen it and reckon it’s a bit of a gem, reminiscent of American Beauty and even more so, Lost In Translation. While George Clooney playing the lead character of Ryan Bingham, is arguably not that stretched in a part tailormade for the lifelong bachelor, he is still very good in the role and he should win in the Best Actor (Drama) category, given the recessionary-themed movie looks a very solid favourite to win Best Picture (Drama).
We recommend taking the best-priced 11-10 Clooney and 8-11 Up In The Air with Ladbrokes.

  1. Why were these two bets value? Up In The Air was evens or better on betfair shortly after you posted.

You need to distinguish between 8/11 bets and tips you put up at , say, 66s. The only way to do this is to assign a “points” value to a selection – you’ve given several selections already for CBB but there is no way of evaluating the relative strengths of each bet without a staking plan.

Thanks for the reply, Mike, and your regular posts. We try to steer clear of recommending Betfair prices as they fluctuate rapidly so to highlight a price on there is in danger of being misleading whereas when posting, the best available price at the time on Oddschecker will always be flagged up.
As it turned out, Up In The Air drifted on Betfair, as you point out. Odds-on shots can prove ‘value’ and our belief was it was value at the time – as it turned out, we were incorrect.
We are happy to leave it to readers to decide how much they wish to stake.
