Tango Teaser

If any further proof was needed Strictly is now following Syco’s dark arts rulebook it came on Saturday when a never-seen-before ‘rule’ emerged.
With Anastacia unable to reprise her salsa due to injury, there was no dance-off vs Melvin and instead the contestant with the lower public vote was eliminated, namely Melvin. This was a first in Strictly history.
You can always tell when the Beeb is squirming – it backs up its actions on It Takes Two in an attempt to persuade the public it is all legitimate. Zoe on Monday read from the allegedly long-established rules of the show to try and appease viewers. More likely, they were hastily drawn up on the back of a fag packet while it was all kicking off backstage.
The reading of the incident here is, they were happy to sacrifice Melvin for the sake of saving their big American signing. In many ways it was an odd decision because given Anastasia is hamstrung by injury she is presumably going to be severely restricted in terms of future choreography. But her appearance fee must have been so vast the Beeb probably wants a minimum of maybe 3 to 4 weeks out of her.
The consequence of this is, it looks on the cards we can expect a major ramping of Anastacia tomorrow night to ensure she avoids the dance-off. She has a VW to ‘A Thousand Years’ which will be easy to eulogise and score highly, keeping her (in theory) safe.
As anticipated last Saturday, Ed’s Charleston proved a triumph. He has already got the public behind him and a samba to ‘Cuban Pete’ gives him the chance to further cement his status on the show as a plucky underdog throwing himself into the Strictly experience, and showing at least glimpses of genuine dance skill.
A quickstep to an iconic Garland and Astaire track is right in Anton’s wheelhouse and could help Lesley impress and more importantly gain them enough votes to avoid the dance-off too. So it starts to look like we could have a surprise bottom 2 on our hands.
The question becomes, who looks most vulnerable among the remainder of the field? Claudia and AJ have an ideal Charleston track to produce something fun and memorable. It’s going to be very fast and is going to suit Claudia’s rapid, bouncy gymnastic feet. It also looks a likely table-topper which may well lead to a short-term price drop on Claudia.
Judge Rinder and Oksana don’t have such a suitable track for their Charleston and one wonders how they will be outfitted to The Flintstones theme. Early training VTs this week showed JR dancing barefoot and this made him look rather odd in some of his movements.
It has been surprising to see him trading as low as third favourite on Betfair this week given he has so far been scored 25 and 27 and the judges have focused mainly on the strange faces he pulls and his lack of technique. The view here is, the market is over-rating his winning chance at the moment despite him building up some early goodwill for his entertaining cha, cha, cha in week 1.
The feedback the contestants have been receiving this series has been informative with Claudia clearly ‘on message’, doing her best Dermot O’Leary impression, and Zoe helping out on ITT as well. In the case of Ed and Greg they have been going out of their way to tell the audience they are doing especially well given they are absolute beginners. You get the impression TPTB have been annoyed by the dance training some of the other contestants have had pre-series.
Will and Karen have an impactful track in ‘Jai Ho’ for their salsa and along with Claudia this could be one booked for a later slot in the running order and a high score. Laura and Giovanni also have a salsa but based on Laura’s struggles with the cha, cha, cha, in week 1 and what we have seen in the training room this week this could prove tough for her to execute to a high standard.
Daisy has a quickstep set to ’Spoonful Of Sugar’ which might not be quite as impressive or impactful as her week 1 waltz. Both Daisy and Laura will need to achieve a position high up on the leaderboard to avoid a surprise bottom 2 appearance while Louise, dancing CCC, and Danny, dancing the paso doble, should be comfortably safe.
Greg found the tango tough due to difficulties with posture. American Smooth is a much more free-flowing ballroom dance, in which he will get the chance to lift Natalie into the air. He should do a much better job with this dancing to ‘Everything I Do…’.
Ore also has more chance to impress dancing the AS as well to the iconic ’Singing’ In The Rain’. Both he and Greg definitely have the window to improve on their series best score of 27. Ore, for one, is going to have to score well because there remains a nagging concern he isn’t the most voteable among this year’s male contenders.
A tango to the Mission Impossible theme is certainly teed up to be dramatic for Naga and Pasha but she has disappointed so far, and has come across as far too serious. If this routine proves more of a miss than a hit she will be in danger. Tameka has a tango too, to the ‘The Heat Is On’, and has looked to be struggling in training. Whichever of these gets the earlier slot could end up looking especially vulnerable.
It is a shame we have no bottom 2 prices issued by the high street. Pre-show Ed, Anastasia and Lesley look well capable of escaping the bottom 2, and there is a case to be made for any of Laura, Ore or Daisy potentially falling into the dance-off this week but the advice here would be to dutch the two tangos – Naga and Tameka – because one of them will have to be on early and whoever is will likely find themselves in big danger.
The potential fly in the ointment remains Ed. If he is on early and the judges try and damn him with faint praise his public vote may not be enough to lift him out of the bottom 2 as he will very likely be anchored to the bottom of the leaderboard. In this scenario he will be worth a savour. The hope is, producers are keen to run with Ed’s entertaining and surprisingly twinkle-toed performances on the show so far.
With Louise and Danny starting to look head and shoulders above the rest of the field, it is easy to envisage the judges talking up of some of the other contestants and inflating their scores to make it look like more of a competition. Certainly Claudia and Will look best placed this week to emerge from the chasing pack.
Will has started to drift to an appealing price in the Outright on Betfair. The view here is, he is a superior dancer to Judge Rinder and he is a better fit with Strictly’s middle England voting audience.
But value is value and it is irresistible to advise Greg again after his price has drifted to 14-1. He remains this year’s stand-out potential journey contestant, with the TPTB showing signs they are keen to build up his challenge.
Greg and Natalie have been coming across really well in interview so far. Natalie just needs to eke out gradual improvement over the weeks and keep coming up with great choreography. In this respect Greg couldn’t be in better hands as she is undoubtedly one of the top pro dancers on the show.

Advised:
Next elimination – Naga Munchetty – 9-2 – William Hill – 2pt win
Tameka Empson – 9-1 – William Hill, Coral – 1pt win
Outright – Greg Rutherford – 14-1 – 1pt e/w – Betstars
Not convinced by Ed in training. Would suggest taking the best price available pre-show for him to be 2nd elim as he has drifted, purely as a cover for previous investments.
Advised:
Ed – 2nd elimination – 4-1 – 1pt win – Ladbrokes
Hi Rob. After last week’s Charleston, I thought Ed would be safe this week, as I assumed he would be dancing a ballroom number. Choosing the Samba in week 3 is a very strange move, and an unnecessary risk. Do the TPTB want him to leave this week?
Ed is likely to receive the lowest score from the judges, and will need a strong public vote to survive. He has been given two good draws thus far, and so is a prime candidate for the dreaded 2nd-5th slot tomorrow.
If Ed does escape the bottom two, I think it will be a case of ‘mission impossible’ for Naga. The partnership with Pasha appears awkward both on and off the dancefloor, and you sense neither would be that unhappy with an exit this week.
Just for fun, I have combined how the judges ranked the celebrities with the latest YouGov poll on who the public would ‘like to win’, to see how last week’s bottom two could potentially have been determined.
Louise 29 pts (15 from judges + 14 from public)
Danny 28 pts (15 + 13)
Will 25 pts (13 + 12)
Daisy 25 pts (14 + 11)
Judge 23 pts (8 + 15)
Claudia 21 pts (12 + 9)
Greg 19 pts (9 + 10)
Laura 18 pts (13 + 5)
Tameka 17 pts (11 + 6)
Naga 12 pts (5 + 7)
Ore 12 pts (10 + 2)
Ed 11 pts (3 + 8)
Lesley 10 pts (6 + 4)
Anastacia 10 pts (7 + 3)
Melvin 5 pts (4 + 1)
I fully expect Claudia’s odds to come tumbling down (pardon the pun) this weekend. The Charleston should be absolutely right up her alley and it’s usually around this time that we have a showstopping dance by one couple that gets 9s at least if not more. Lifts and tricks are legal, I think this could be the week she stands out.
Hi M8. I expect Claudia to perform last or next to last on Saturday, and would not be surprised to see her earn the weekly high score.
It’s a shame the bookies are not pricing up the high/low score markets this year. It’s exactly a year ago that I backed Jay at 7/2 to top score with his jive.
I’d agree with that James. Betfair Exchange have a high score market open where Claudia is 2.2 for high score. Better than nothing but disappointing none the less. As far as eliminations go I think it’ll be fairly obvious early on whose on the block as the running order becomes clear. Hopefully Naga gets a spot somewhere around 2-5.
Just watching live and had to post quickly. Looks like Rob’s hunch about Will not taking criticism well was spot on. He’s just had an interesting little ding dong with Len over salsa content. Also Anastasia and Lesley have gone 2nd and 4th respectively in the running order.
Naga in at 6. Fairly average scores but nice comments from Len especially. They’ve given some scope to possibly save her in a dance off should they wish. Ed Balls having a seemingly later slot plus a pretty solid bet for lowest score of the night should bode well for him staying out the bottom two. Tameka hasn’t gone yet either.
Worry for Ana. Hope she gets enough of a b2 bounce from last week’s drama. Naga looks in trouble. Laura could drop down…?
Fingers crossed Naga goes out in the dance-off.
Tameka v Laura
TAMEKA OUT
Another good night for the site. Hope you all managed some 9-1 🙂
What a bonus that is! We don’t have to listen to that horrible screech of hers any longer. Can’t believe Naga avoided the bottom two though. That BBC breakfast fanbase is not to be underestimated.
Mystic Rob does it again. I’m certainly glad that I followed your recommendations! Not sure what TPTB’s plan was for last night. Anastacia was given the death slot in the running order, and a far less sympathetic edit than I was expecting. Of the two BBC employees dancing the Tango, Tameka was given the preferential treatment in the running order, and there was so much red and black in Naga’s staging, I thought I was watching an X-Factor hatchet job!
It was a peculiar decision to end the show with Louise’s routine. Claudia, Ore, Danny or Ed seemed to be more logical choices. If I hadn’t seen Louise’s YouGov polling, I would be thinking her vote was fragile.
Currently I think the final will consist of Danny, two from Louise, Claudia & Daisy, and one from Will, Greg & Ore.
Anastacia and Brendan will be dancing the Rumba to ‘The Way We Were’ by Barbra Streisand
Claudia and AJ will be dancing the Foxtrot to ‘I Really Like You’ by Carly Rae Jepsen
Daisy and Aljaz will be dancing the Rumba to ‘Careless Whisper’ by George Michael
Danny and Oti will be dancing the Quickstep to ‘I Won’t Dance’ by Fred Astaire
Ed and Katya will be dancing the Paso Doble to ‘Holding Out For a Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler
Greg and Natalie will be dancing the Salsa to ‘Wrapped Up’ by Olly Murs
Judge Rinder and Oksana will be dancing the Viennese Waltz to ‘Boom Bang A Bang’ by Lulu
Laura and Giovanni will be dancing the Quickstep to ‘Ballroom Blitz’ by The Sweet
Lesley and Anton will be dancing the Charleston to ‘Won’t You Charleston With Me’ from The Boy Friend
Louise and Kevin will be dancing the Foxtrot to ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’ by Amy Winehouse
Naga and Pasha will be dancing the Charleston to ‘Minnie the Mermaid’ by Firehouse Five Plus Two
Ore and Joanne will be dancing the Jive to ‘Runaway Baby’ by Bruno Mars
Looks on paper like a fairly straightforward bottom two this coming week for me looking at those dances. Surely Anastasia and one of the Charleston dancers with Ana leaving. Ed probably bottom of the leaderboard again. Great Jive track for Ore, Holly and Artem’s Jive to that song is one of my personal favourites from that series. Laura looks set to be ramped up in order to keep her safe. I really like you is terrible song for a foxtrot so the band are going to have to do some serious work slowing that down to suit Claudia and AJ’s dance. Finally, Will Young has sacked it all off! We don’t know why yet, could be a personal reason we don’t know about, it could be a medical reason, or it could secretly be because he knows he blew his chances of winning last week hehe.
Always nice when you swerve the early favourite. Never looked like winning from the get go. Absolutely ridiculous odds on Danny mac right now. 5/4! Jay was still 5/1 at this point last year and hadn’t even done his incredible jive. I don’t get Danny macs odds.
After Will’s departure, the BBC can ill afford another celebrity to withdraw. Therefore I think it’s likely that Anastacia will be the one eliminated this week, before she can cause herself any further injury.
This week she is dancing the Rumba. To date 25 female celebrities aged over 35 have danced the Rumba, and 15 of them have ended that week with the judges low score and/or in the overall bottom two.
Anton gets criticised for his performance in the Latin dances, however Brendan has a pretty poor record in recent years too. On the last six occasions that he has performed a Latin dance in an elimination week, he has ended in the bottom 2 on five occasions, and been eliminated twice.
